SUEZ wins €108m WTW contract in Sri Lanka

SUEZ has won a €108 million euro contract to design and construct an additional phase of the Kelani Right Bank drinking water production in Columbo by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board of Sri Lanka.

The aim is to double the plant’s existing capacity in order to supply the population in the north-eastern zone of the city and the surrounding area - total value of the contract is €108 million euros.

In order to meet population growth, urbanization and the growing demand for water the authorities in Sri Lanka have decided to make drinking water production one of their priorities.

The new contract for the design and the construction of the additional phase will supply water to more than 1 million inhabitants in the North Eastern zone of Columbo, the capital of Sri Lanka. When complete the plant’s existing capacity will double to 360,000m litres a day.

SUEZ will equip the plant with two new degremont technologies – Pulsatube and Aquazur V. The technologies are capable of treating larger quantities of water, whilst handling frequent variations in both quality and flow rate – the country is regularly faced with extreme weather events.

The contract also includes finalization of a saline barrier to prevent seawater flowing upstream into the river and to protect water resources.

French-headquartered SUEZ has had an active presence in Sri Lanka for more than 50 years and has built numerous treatment plants across the country. Once the plant is completed, nearly half of all the water supply to supply will be treated by facilities built by SUEZ.
