Severn Trent Water awards second phosphorus removal contract to Bluewater Bio

Severn Trent Water, through its key capital delivery partner Costain/Stantec (CiM6), has awarded a second phosphorus removal contract to treatment solutions provider Bluewater Bio Ltd.

CiM6 selected the’s high rate multi-media filtration technology FilterClear  to satisfy stringent total phosphorous discharge consent requirements.

The jv opted for FilterClear for the provision of a Tertiary Solids Removal (TSR) plant at the water company’s Brockhampton Sewage Treatment Works in Gloucestershire in order to achieve compliance with the new consent of 0.25 mg/l for phosphorus, under the Water Framework Directive.

Bluewater Bio are providing a fully automated 4v2340 tertiary solids removal plant at Brockhampton STW, a medium sized activated sludge works, serving a population equivalent (P.E.) of 16,000, treating influent from within the Cheltenham catchment. Once completed, the FilterClear solids removal plant will be capable of treating in excess of 116 l/s.

The contract scope will include design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of a new TSR plant, with delivery scheduled for May 2018.The contract marks the company’s second phosphorus removal scheme in the past 12 months, both for Severn Trent Water.

FilterClear had previously undergone an extensive trial at Yorkshire Water’s Bolsover treatment works, as part of the Chemical Investigation Program (CIP). FilterClear was demonstrated to be one of the few technologies able to consistently meet the challenging TP target of 0.1 mg/l for this size of works.

Fergus Rooksby, Commercial Director of Bluewater Bio, commented:

“We are delighted to work with both Severn Trent and CiM6 on this P removal scheme. Given the increase in stringent P consents coming into force this AMP, we believe FilterClear is in a strong position to meet the needs of the UK water market.”

“This contract, in addition to our current contract at Codsall STWs in Staffordshire – due to be commissioned and operational in February 2018 – allows us to showcase FilterClear as an ideal option for a chemical dosing approach to low phosphate concentration consents.”

FilterClear is both a modular and scalable process, treating flows ranging from 2 L/s to in excess of 1,000 L/s. The technology has a proven track record across multiple applications, both domestically and internationally, having proven to be highly competitive when compared with mono and dual media and other filtration systems.

FilterClear’s innovative patented design and offsite manufacturing offers the lowest total cost of ownership for tertiary filtration applications, Fergus Rooksby added.
