United Utilities has gone out to tender with an AMP8/9 contract for smart metering supply, installation and connectivity services worth an estimated £630 million.

The water company has committed to the rollout of more than 900,000 Smart AMI meters during AMP 8 as a key enabler to reduce water supply volumes via reductions in per capita consumption, reductions in customer-side leakage and non-half-hourly demand.
To achieve this United Utilities intends to appoint a single prime contractor to deliver the full scope of services - Smart Meter supply, meter installation and connectivity services/comms, whether directly or through sub-contract arrangements, for the 5 year AMP 8 period, with extension options up to the end of AMP 9.
The utility’s strategy to implement and manage its Smart Meter estate is to appoint a single supplier to acquire, deploy, commission, network and maintain the estate.
The appointed supplier will be responsible for:
- Supply of Water Meters
- Communications Unit (if water meter is not an integrated smart meter)
- Meter Installation
- Communications Network
- Data management system and;
- Meter warranty
Time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 9 February 2024 – click here to access the tender documentation.
