Mining Remediation Authority asks suppliers to register interest in £30m framework for borehole drilling and testing

The Mining Remediation Authority is inviting interested suppliers to register their interest in an upcoming £30 million framework for borehole drilling and testing in former mining areas ahead of starting the formal procurement process.

The Authority is seeking to inform the market of its procurement strategy and inviting them to express their interest in the opportunity no later than 4pm on 7thMarch 2025. Estimated date of publication of a formal contract notice is currently 20 July 2025

The MRA is looking for supplier feedback to aid it in building a effective and innovative procurement solution.

The MRA requires a framework agreement for the provision of services relating to the construction and testing of boreholes in former mining areas. The services are anticipated to include borehole drilling, construction, testing, maintenance, cleaning, rehabilitation, technical support and associated works/services.

The Authority currently has the capacity to treat 220 billion litres of mine water every year. The mine water treatment prevents nearly 4000 tonnes of iron solids iron solids and other pollutants entering watercourses or aquifers. Last year 97% of the iron solid waste was recycled or reused.

Boreholes are used to improve the MRA’s understanding of mine water - they provide critical water level and quality monitoring data used to assess potential risks to aquifers and surface water bodies.
