Anglian Water has awarded an AMP8 contract for grit, screening and iron sludge waste management services worth an estimated £14.4 million.
Initial contract term is 5 years , with a further potential extension of up to further 3 years.
The contract was tendered in the following three Lots - the Lots cover key areas where a significant tonnage is output from the water company’s operational sites each year.
Lot 1 – Grit
The waste management partner is required to provide skips or containers to collect the grit as it is output from the waste recycling process. Following this, the partner provides haulage services to transport the waste to Anglian’s grit hubs for recycling by AW.
Lot 2 - Screenings
The waste management partner is required to provide skips or containers to collect the screenings as it is output from the waste recycling process. Following this, the partner provides collection and haulage services to transport the waste off site to a disposal site. At the time of going out to tender this was via landfill sites. However, Anglian Water said this does not align with its sustainability goals or Circular Economy Strategy and a disposal option higher on the waste hierarchy would be preferable.
Lot 3 -Iron Sludge
The waste management partner is required to provide skips or containers to collect the iron sludge as it is output from the water treatment works process. Following this, the partner provides collection and haulage services to transport the waste off site to a disposal site.
Anglian Water split the contract into three separate Lots to try to identify innovative alternatives to disposal via landfill which are available within the market.
The water company received a single tender for the contract, which has now been awarded – however, no information has as yet been provided on the successful supplier.
