United Utilities has awarded an AMP8 contract for two powder activated carbon dosing systems with an estimated value of £892,800 including VAT.
The direct contract award to Transvac Systems Ltd which was made without first going out to tender was implemented on the basis of extreme and unavoidable urgency.
A transparency notice from the water company said that extreme dry weather has resulted in reservoir stocks being substantially below the annual norm (circa 60%), causing a risk to the provision of water services.
United Utilities explained that the carbon dosing equipment is required as soon as possible to mitigate the effects of the drought.
Carbon dosing equipment is typically on a long lead time (6 months or longer) – the systems have been sourced via a supplier who have been able to deliver in less than half of this timescale after a search of the market, United Utilities said.
The direct award is being made on the basis that the equipment will be delivered in the shortest known lead-time available, the company added.
