Gary Jackson, the Executive Director of ACWA Emirates, has appointed a high-profile local expert, Hany Haddad, as Chief Officer-Business Development and Strategy, to strengthen the team and promote the company’s capabilities in what is seen as a key market.

Mr Haddad, who has an extensive background in reverse osmosis (RO) and wastewater, will leverage the company’s RO and wastewater reuse expertise to build on its many existing regional achievements.

His previous experience includes several of the region’s landmark desalination and wastewater projects, and he has considerable experience in bidding, project supervision, technical support for RO technologies and banking operations.

Mr Haddad has also worked for a well-regarded membrane manufacturer, giving him an in-depth knowledge of systems, local issues, and a wide range of contacts at all levels from government to suppliers.

He says: “The GCC countries have already passed the water scarcity limit, which is defined by the WHO as a renewable water availability of 1000M3/year per capita.

“The governments in the region are taking this threat extremely seriously and are working on reducing the gap between water demand - which is growing rapidly - and supply. This could be achieved in a number of ways, for example by introducing new technologies that save on RO capex and opex costs, applying advanced wastewater treatment technologies and managing water leakage."

He adds: “ACWA’s extensive experience in the region, which includes the prestigious Palm Jumeirah RO plant and the largest MBR wastewater treatment works in operation at Al Ansab, in Oman, means the company already has a strong regional presence and reputation for state-of-the-art, cost-effective solutions.

“My aim is to build on this strong base, leveraging my wide experience and contacts and knowledge of the local culture to ensure that every opportunity is assessed at the earliest stage, and that the best, most cost and energy-efficient technologies are teamed with the most competitive pricing at bid stage. In this way, we will be able to provide our clients with the optimum solutions for their requirements in this demanding market.”
