Z-Tech Control Systems has been commissioned to undertake 3 Allen Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLC) 5 upgrades to ControlLogix for Crossness and Beckton Sewage Treatment works, as part of Thames Water’s investment programme.
Sub-contracting to GBMJV, Z-Tech is undertaking the Systems upgrade, worth £417,000, over a six month period.
PLC5’s are currently unsupported legacy units and these units have been programmed in a monolithic manner, making fault finding and upgrades difficult. With the new ControlLogix PLC, Thames Water is able to change the whole philosophy in pumps and drives: this not only means that future upgrades and maintenance will be made easier, but the new programming will also optimise the process for increased efficiencies.
Nick McLauchlan, Systems Business Manager said:
“Although team members had already proved themselves as experts in this area, we were up against stiff competition. It’s a great project for the team and will provide us with the opportunity to really shine.
“There’s also likely to be an increase in this sort of work as the PLC 5’s become increasingly difficult to support and the superiority of the ControlLogix system means plant efficiencies.”
