Bradford Council to develop hydropower scheme

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is planning to develop a hydro-electric power scheme.

The Council has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Aire at Salts Mill Weir, Saltaire.

Bradford is seeking to install a hydro-electric power scheme at the existing weir consisting of an Archimedean screw turbine, a fish pass and an eel pass. A notch will also be incorporated into the weir to aid fish passage.

All of the water used to operate the scheme will be returned to the River Aire immediately downstream of the weir.
