Southern Water flood scheme wins national award

A Southern Water flood alleviation scheme was described as “exemplary” after winning gold at a national awards ceremony recognising customer care.

The £20 million project to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in parts of Portsmouth and Southsea was recognised at the Considerate Constructors 2015 Site Awards. As well as a gold award, it was named second best overall site in the country.

Carried out by contractor 4Delivery, the scheme involved construction of new pipes and sewers as well as two new underground pumping stations. Construction started in October 2012 at various locations across the city and completed last year.

Judges noted the site team’s efforts to communicate with customers, keep everyone safe, protect the environment and support the community.

Judges said: “Integration with the local community was central to this extensive project and was managed to the highest level. This has been an exemplary site which has been a pleasure to monitor.”

Southern Water’s Capital Communications Manager Madeline Stoneman said:

“This was a major project, so talking to communities and keeping impact to a minimum  was a priority. We’re grateful to customers for their support, which contributed to the success of the scheme.”

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is an independent organisation founded by the industry to improve its image.

4Delivery is now building Southern Water’s new £60 million treatment works in Woolston, Southampton.

Diary date: In partnership with the Environment Agency, the Flood Expo which takes place in London on 14th and 15th October presents solutions to widespread flooding problems from the UK’s leading flood prevention companies, alongside an extensive seminar and workshop schedule highlighting new, cost-effective ways to prevent and manage floods. Click here for more information.
