Flood prevention to dominate agenda at water watchdog’s Taunton meeting

Consumers can pledge their support for a campaign to end the misery caused by avoidable sewer blockages, when the Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) meets in Taunton next Tuesday.

Sewerage and environmental experts are set to join the discussion at the consumer watchdog’s Board meeting in public, which will look at the work being done to tackle sewer flooding and improve flood resilience across the region and further afield.

Wessex Water will highlight its own campaign to reduce the amount of sewer blockages caused by so-called ‘flushable’ wet wipes. These products were responsible for more than two-thirds of the 13,000 blockages Wessex dealt with last year, putting thousands of homes at risk of sewer flooding.

The meeting will also focus on efforts by the water industry and its partners to develop a sustainable drainage system for future generations, as well as work by the Environment Agency to strengthen flood resilience.

Alan Lovell, Chair of the Consumer Council for Water, said:

“It’s easy to take our sewerage and drainage system for granted but climate change and population growth are putting it under intense pressure.”

“Action is needed now to ensure we don’t store up problems for future generations. We look forward to hearing how water companies and the Environment Agency are getting to grips with these challenges.”

Consumers will also have the opportunity to put any issues or concerns about their water or sewerage services and bills to the independent watchdog’s board.

The meeting starts at 10.45am at Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton. To confirm attendance email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
