New Chair to help Wales manage flood risk

Environment Minister Jane Davidson has announced the appointment of a new Chair to the Welsh body that advises on flood risk management.

The Minister has appointed Mr Deep Sagar as the new Chair of Flood Risk Management Wales.

Speaking about the appointment, the Minister said:

“I am very pleased that Deep Sagar has accepted the appointment of Chair of Flood Risk Management Wales.

“The effects of climate change mean that flood risk is on the increase. Indeed we know that one in six properties in Wales is currently at risk of flooding, with flooding estimated to cause in the region of £200 million of damage each year. The increase in the problem demands an ever more focused approach to flood risk management. "

Chris Mills, Director, Environment Agency Wales, said:

"My team and I  look forward to working with Mr Sagar on the critical task of reducing flood risk in Wales. His extensive business experience will be invaluable to help achieve best value for money in protecting as many people as possible from the devastation of flooding."

Flood Risk Management Wales (FRMW) is an executive committee that advises the Assembly Government and the Environment Agency on flood risk management in Wales. It approves the level of investment for strategic flood management by the Environment Agency in Wales and the annual programme of work.

The Committee, which is currently made up of 18 members, meets at least 4 times a year. The role of the committee and its membership is currently being revised as a result of the Flood and Water Management Act.
