Floods highlight need for urgent climate action, says FOE

A director from Friends of the Earth has said that the recent devastating floods are a “wake-up call” for Britain to take action on climate change and reduce emissions.

Policy and Campaigns Director Craig Bennett stated experts are predicting that climate change will trigger more frequent floods in the future, creating severe disruption in the UK.

He also warned the UK Treasury on costs of climate change.

"These floods show how wrongheaded George Osborne is when he talks only about the costs of tackling climate change,” Bennett said. “The misery that thousands of families are experiencing today is a reminder of the far bigger costs we all face of failing to cut emissions.

"The Government must show leadership and move quickly to slash UK emissions and help protect us all from the threat of increasing global climate change."

International climate talks are starting in Doha, Qatar, where leaders of every world nation will discuss how to advance with combatting climate change.

The UK has suffered several instances of flooding this year as one of the wettest summers was recorded in 2012. At the time of press, the Environment Agency has issued 198 flood warnings and 288 flood alerts across the country as it battles another severe wet spell.
