The Environment Agency are proposing to repair existing flod defences and build new ones along a section of the River Tame in Birmingham where 1,408 properties are at risk of flooding.
A new design consisting of upstream storage is currently being considered for the Perry Barr and Witton flood risk management scheme
The Environment Agency are currently looking in more detail at the upstream storage option to determine:
- how and where it could be constructed
- how it will operate
- how often it will fill and
- how much it will cost
To reduce the delay to the scheme construction the Environment Agency may look at building the scheme in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of the works through Witton and Phase 2 will include the upstream storage area construction.
The Perry Barr and Witton scheme is 1 of 6 separate projects that take forward the recommendations of the River Tame flood risk management strategy. The strategy aims to reduce flood risk to people and property along the River Tame.
In terms of timescales, a planning application for Phase 1 would be submitted in Autumn 2014, with construction scheduled to begin in Spring 2015. A planning application submission for Phase 2 would follow in Spring 2015, with construction to begin in 2016.
