Public losing trust in green taxes

According to a new report from the Environmental Audit Committee, the Treasury has undermined public trust in green taxes by appearing to use them as a revenue raising tool rather than a serious attempt to change environmentally damaging behaviour.

Members of the European Parliament have voted against proposals to make further cuts in European greenhouse gas emissions.

Defra’s independent review of Ofwat, published today, has concluded that regulation in the water sector has worked well since privatisation and that major change is not needed either to the statutory framework or regulatory landscape. However, the water industry regulator has also come in for serious criticism.

Balfour Beatty trading update

Balfour Beatty plc, the international infrastructure group, has issued a  trading update ahead of its results for the half-year ended 1 July 2011 which will be announced on 17 August 2011.

Northumbrian Water Group Plc has issued a statement confirming that it has received a possible offer from Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Limited.

The House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee, chaired by Tim Yeo MP, has launched a new inquiry into the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

A report in today’s Guardian newspaper says that London councils are calling for a radical rethink for Thames Water’s plans to build a “super sewer” for London.

Drought and risk of drought not over

The Environment Agency is warning that drought and the risk of drought is not over in its latest drought information update.

The water companies have expressed serious concerns about industry regulator Ofwat’s approach to setting price limits.
