The upgrade will reduce leaks and bursts and improve network capacity and resilience.

Thames Water is carrying out the £5.1 million investment programme upgrade in Biggin Hill, South London, where 3.9km of pipe is being replaced in a crucial area of the network around Biggin Hill airport.

The work began in May and will take up to two years to complete. Thames Water will work closely with the local authorities to ensure efficiency and minimal disruption.

The work is part of Thames Water’s continued investment in vital infrastructure upgrades as it works to improve, maintain and innovate the wider water network.

Peter Fortune, MP for Bromley & Biggin Hill, visited the site and spoke to Thames Water about the work, as well as recognising Thames Water’s communication around the works – he commented:

“It’s absolutely vital that this infrastructure is updated. This is old infrastructure that has been breaking and leaking consistently for the last couple of years, so this is really important.

“I know that Thames Water, as they’ve been doing this work, have been working with local councillors, the council, residents and local businesses to make sure that there is constant communication. I really appreciate that Thames have gone to a lot of effort to make sure that communication is flowing all the time.”

David Gable, Senior Project Manager at Thames Water, said:

“Our purpose is to deliver life’s essential service, so our customers, communities and the environment can thrive. It’s vital that we upgrade our ageing infrastructure and the Biggin Hill investment will provide greater resilience to the area and ensure fewer supply interruptions for customers. It’s an example of the work we are doing across the region to improve our performance and provide the best quality service we can for years to come.”
