Six major consultancies have been appointed to the Environment Agency’s (EA) National Contaminated Land Consultancy Framework, worth around £10 million.

The  Environment Agency for England and Wales has published its latest 2011 progress update for the Water Framework Directive. Currently only 28% of surface water bodies and 27% of rivers are classified at good ecological status.

The European Commission is asking Germany to comply with EU water legislation.

Last week the Environment Agency released a list of the ten most improved rivers in England and Wales. Conservationists have criticised the report saying it presents a rosy view of river health and ignores the many waterways struggling with pollution, over abstraction and other threats.

Environment Agency Wales has published the full findings of its latest otter survey – nine out of every ten sites surveyed across Wales are now showing signs of otters, compared to only two out of ten in 1978.

The Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) has published its response to the Defra consultation on phosphates in domestic laundry cleaning products in England.

Ofwat has today published the supporting document it has been asked to prepare by Defra as leader of the water sector group to evaluate the implications of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) for the water industry in England and Wales.
