Draft proposals by Ofwat on the water companies’ AMP6 business plans published today, mean average bills for water and wastewater customers would fall by around 5% in real terms between 2015 and 2020.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has written to the water companies to say it will provide full transparency when it publishs its draft determination decisions on the business plans for the upcoming 2015-20 AMP6 investment programme on Friday.

The latest annual report from the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland shows that Scottish Water’s compliance with the standards for drinking water in 2013 has continued to improve.

Following the consultation on Towards the Sustainable Management of Wales’ Natural Resources, the Welsh Government’s White Paper consultation on proposals for an Environment Bill, work is continuing to prepare the Bill for introduction into the National Assembly for Wales in 2015.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has announced that the 'costs principle', widely cited as creating an inefficient barrier to competition, is to be replaced.

Ofwat is now offering the water companies the opportunity to change both the length or form of their non-household retail controls ahead of the opening of the non-household retail market in April 2017.

Water industry regulator Ofwat has written to United Utilities challenging it to to justify a £760 million gap it has identified between the water company’s re-submitted AMP6 Business Plan and its own assessment of efficient wholesale costs.

Ofwat has said that of the £655 million requested by Thames for its activities on the Thames Tideway Tunnel, it has only adequately justified £324 million of expenditure.
