Government launches cyber security breaches survey

The Government is undertaking a survey of UK businesses to find out how they approach cyber security and learn more about the cyber security issues faced by industry.

Ipsos MORI has been commissioned to carry out the survey fieldwork which is taking place by telephone from October 2016 to December 2016. During this period some organisations will be called by an Ipsos MORI interviewer from their Edinburgh office inviting them to take part.

Taking part in the survey is totally confidential and anonymous for all individuals and organisations.

Ipsos MORI would still like to speak to businesses even if they have not had any cyber security issues, to help ensure the findings are representative of all organisations.

Businesses across the UK have been selected at random from the Government’s Inter-Departmental Business Register. Within these businesses, Ipsos MORI is inviting the senior person with the most knowledge or responsibility when it comes to cyber security to take part.

Participation will involve a telephone interview with an interviewer from Ipsos MORI - on average each interview last around 20 minutes.

Key questions include:

  • In your last financial year just gone, approximately how much, if anything, did you invest in cyber security - excluding any spending on repair or recovery from breaches or attacks.
  • Do you have insurance which would cover you in the event of a cyber security breach or attack, or not?
  • Have you ever made any insurance claims for cyber security breaches under this insurance before?
  • In the last 12 months, approximately how much, if anything, do you think cyber security breaches or attacks have cost your organisation in total financially?

The results of the research will inform Government policy on cyber security and how the Government works with industry to make the UK one of the most secure places to do business online.
