Severn Trent Green Power’s anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Derby is ready to receive food waste again following a programme of refurbishment.

The site in Megaloughton Lane now incorporates a new front-end treatment process and additional digestion capacity through the construction of two additional digester tanks.
After a 12-month refurb process, the site, which can treat up to 50,000 tonnes of unavoidable food waste, has now commenced its performance testing and commissioning phase. Once commissioning has completed in early 2024, the AD facility at Derby will produce enough energy to power almost 7,000 homes each year and produce a valuable organic fertiliser for local agricultural outlets.
The works were delivered in partnership between Severn Trent Green Power’s (STGP) in-house engineering team and Agrivert Ltd, who acted as the main CDM Contractor for the project.

We’ve invested heavily in the site and look forward to it now becoming a flagship facility for the collection and processing of food waste from across the Midlands. We believe that the site is a major asset to the community in Derby, helping to turn food waste into renewable energy to power UK homes and businesses and produce a nutrient-rich liquid bio-fertiliser for farmland. The completion of the Derby project alongside our recent acquisition of Andigestion Ltd cements Green Power as the largest producer of renewable energy from food waste in the UK across our portfolio of 11 AD facilities.”
Derby AD site will accept category 3 food waste from a wide area, including Derby and many of the surrounding regions. The food disposed of will primarily come from nearby local authorities and commercial customers such as food producers and retailers.
