Yorkshire Water, in collaboration with the Environment Agency, is proposing to introduce a compensation regime in the River Dibb (a tributary of the River Wharfe) downstream of Grimwith Reservoir.
The Environment Agency is required to give notice of the proposal which has been made under Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding ) Regulations 2006.
The River Dibb is located east of Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. From the 12 January 2015 for a period of 5 years the following minimum flow compensation discharges will be made on the next working day from the following dates:
- 1 January to 19 April 15,100 cubic metres a day
- 20 April to 10 May 7,800 cubic metres per day
- 11 May to 11 October 3,800 cubic metres per day
- 12 October to 31 October 7,800 cubic metres per day
- 1 November to 31 December 15,100 cubic metres per day
The discharges will provide a new protected low flow and will occur in combination with the existing regulatory releases. There are no licensed abstractors on the River Dibb.
The intention of the trial is to improve the ecology of the river to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive. The Environment Agency said that monitoring will take place throughout the duration of the trial.
