New application to impound water for hydro scheme

The Environment Agency has received an application for two licences to impound water from the Itchen in connection with a new hydropower scheme.

The application is for two licences to obstruct or impede the flow of a branch of the Itchen Navigation channel known as Shawford Mill bypass channel at Shawford Mill, Shawford, Winchester, Hampshire at National Grid References SU 47369 24919 and SU 47376 24855.

The first application is to lower the crest of the left and right sections of an existing concrete bag weir at SU 47369 24919.

The second application is to lower the crest of the central/left section of an existing concrete bag weir downstream of the first weir at SU 47376 24855.

Both applications are to maintain the habitat in Shawford Mill bypass channel and have been submitted in connection with applications NPS/WR/008465 and NPS/WR/014694 for a new hydropower scheme at Shawford Mill, which were advertised on 12 December 2013.
