A major upgrade of the N241 road near Schagen in North Holland is using a 1000 mm siphon system from Van Heck to divert water during the extension of a culvert under the road.
Boskalis, the contractor working on the upgrade,is extending the culvert because the road will be widened and an additional separate cycling lane will be built that can also be used for agricultural traffic.
During construction the water which normally flows through the culvert has to be diverted. Boskalis is using a siphon system supplied by Van Heck to provide an energy efficient and quiet solution, due to the location of nearby houses.
An additional requirement was that the water has to flow both ways - which would usually have meant putting two pumps in place. The siphon system will achieve this by using a road bridge automatically as water always flows from the highest to the lowest point.
Siphon pipe systems are used to transport large volumes of water on a wide range of construction sites. Siphoning is used in redirections and watermark regulation at sites with natural or artificial gradients. Capacities starting at 500 m3/hour apply to cases of watermark differences of 25 cm.
Key features of the Van Heck siphon pipe system are its low energy and operational cost and the extremely low noise level of 54 dB(A) at a distance of five metres. The energy consumed during the operation is almost negligible, while the self-regulating operation of the fully automated installation guarantees problem-free operation.
The siphon system is expected to be operational until the end of April.
Van Heck pumps were brought in from Holland by the Environment Agency for major pumping operations on the Somerset Levels following severe flooding in 2014. The firm will be exhibiting at the Agency’s major three day flood conference taking place in Telford this month.
