The practice of running digester mixing systems to destruction is a false economy and a very poor advert for the water/AD industry – according to leading AD technologies specialist Landia who supply key components including mixers and pumps in biogas plants throughout Europe.
Mixing systems with moving parts inside a digester have now proved so costly to service, says Landia, that rather than maintain them, which involves the costly procedure of emptying the tank, most are now being run until they break.
This practice can see mixers lasting as little as 12 months or even less in the very worst cases.
“The industry should pride itself on creating renewable energy from a waste product and rightly so”, said Landia’s Paul Davies, “but knowingly destroying pumps and then scrapping them is hardly good environmental practice – especially when there is such a simple, carbon-friendly alternative in externally-mounted mixing systems that are also much safer and far more energy efficient”.
Landia’s externally mounted GasMix system, serviced twice pa, is expected to have a lifetime of at least 25 years.
