Glasgow-based Howden supplies turbo compressors to Houston Wastewater Treatment Plant

Leading global provider of mission critical air and gas handling products, technologies and services, Howden, has signed a contract with LEM construction co. to supply turbo compressors for the City of Houston’s Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats an average flow of 10.2 million gallons of wastewater per day.

Howden will supply three of its Turblex KA22SV-GL225 blowers, enabled with Howden Uptime and local control panels, to LEM construction, a family-owned, Houston-based general contracting firm that specializes in the construction of water and wastewater pumpstations and treatment facilities.

Originally constructed in the 1980s, Houston’s wastewater collection system moves wastewater, a byproduct of domestic, industrial, commercial, or agricultural activities, to the local treatment plant where it is treated and safely returned to bayous and lakes.

As part of the City’s ongoing program for improvements and expansion, the plant will undergo upgrade work to continue to meet the needs of the citizens in its service area and increase the plant capacity and improve process reliability and efficiency.

Based in the United States, John S. Parrish, Vice President – Commercial at Howden, said:

“Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant required specific turbo compressors to correspond with its existing process control systems. We worked closely with the design engineers, customer and owner to provide a competitive solution for the new blowers at the plant.

“The need to minimize energy consumption, whether for cost or environmental reasons, has become a factor of enormous significance for many of our customers. Howden’s blowers, already characterized by low footprint and high flows, now have the added benefit of being Uptime enabled, allowing Howden to monitor and recommend the most appropriate operational parameters to optimise performance and the efficiency of our customers’ aeration process. The high quality turbo compressor components ensure long-term reliability and minimum maintenance.”

Howden provides high efficiency blowers and innovative digital solutions for advanced, efficient smart aeration systems to support wastewater treatment. A well-designed aeration system has a direct impact on wastewater treatment, reducing the length the process takes, increasing energy efficiency, and cutting costs.

Howden's range of high-efficiency blowers perform the critical functions required to manage effluent from municipal sewage systems and from many industrial processes.

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Howden has over 160 years of heritage as a world-class application engineering and manufacturing company with a presence in 35 countries.

Howden manufactures highly engineered fans, compressors, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and other air and gas handling equipment, and provides service and support to customers around the world in highly diversified end-markets and geographies.
