Webinar to explore moving indirect potable water reuse to full implementation

UK water companies are invited to join an upcoming webinar which will explore how the sector can take indirect potable reuse (IPR) from concept to full-scale operational reality.

XYLEM INDIRECT POTABLE WATER RESUSE WEBINAR JULY 2026

The online event on 14 July 2026 will be hosted by technology provider Xylem, whose water treatment technologies are already supporting major IPR plants worldwide. Xylem is currently working with several UK utilities on IPR project design, pilot schemes and demonstration plants.

Indirect potable reuse (IPR) is the most common approach to water reuse, and one that UK water companies are starting to adopt as a critical component of their water resource strategies.

The process involves treating wastewater to a very high standard prior to release into a river, reservoir or aquifer, from which it can later be abstracted and further treated to produce safe drinking water. Moving IPR from concept to full-scale operation requires advanced treatment systems that can deliver continuous, 24/7 protection of public health, while consistently meeting regulatory standards.

Presenting at the webinar will be:

  • Xylem’s Barry Hopton, UK head of wastewater treatment - Xylem
  • Uwe Hübner, senior process engineer, water reuse & advanced oxidation process - Xylem
  • Germano Salazar-Benites, water reuse engineer, Hampton Road Sanitation District's Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT), chair of the Water Reuse Program Committee and second vice-chair of the Water Reuse Community at the Water Environment Federation.

Discussion points will include:

  • designing for continuous protection of public health
  • monitoring of contaminants that cannot be measured in real-time
  • using Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) based frameworks to underpin compliance and confidence.

Xylem webinar: ‘Indirect Potable Reuse: From Concept to Demonstration and Full-Scale Implementation’ will take place on 14 July 2026 at 1pm BST
