TECHNOLOGY DRIVING AL SHUMAISI WWT SCHEME

As Saudi Arabia’s Al Shumaisi wastewater treatment plant takes shape advanced technology is very much driving the scheme, so report lead contractor ACWA Emirates. The plant, which is sited in the western region of the country between the cities of Makkah and Jeddah, will have a 12,000m3/day capacity and features ACWA’s award-winning Memtreat® membrane bioreactor technology (MBR).

The scheme has a high degree of automation and therefore the reliability of the technologies used is critical. The contract also requires an extremely high quality effluent with a BOD and TSS of less than 5ppm. Treated wastewater quality is such that it will be designated for unrestricted use.

ACWA Emirates Director and General Manager, Gary Jackson, said: “Our work at Al Shumaisi is very much driven by our expertise and ability to deliver reliable, high-technology MBR systems. This plant has an extremely high degree of automation and therefore the reliability of our technologies is critical”.

Al_Shumaisi_MBR_v2The treated effluent from the Al Shumaisi plant will be of an extremely high quality and will be suitable for direct discharge without further treatment for uses such as irrigation, district cooling, batching plants and industrial process waters. In this desert area, the main planned use for the effluent is irrigation.

ACWA has built over 33 MBR plants in this region in the last seven years and have a reputation for providing high-quality, cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions exactly tailored to clients’ needs.

The Company is in the process of opening an operational office in Saudi Arabia to serve this key market, offering construction services to clients in addition to its operation and maintenance expertise.
