South East Water start work on £8.1m pipeline challenge

South East Water will start work in January on an £8.1 million project to replace an old pipeline buried in Burham Marshes which has burst nine times over the past four years - deemed the most complex water main installation project the utility has ever undertaken.

The 12 month project, once complete, will ensure the supply of water to Maidstone and the surrounding area.

Chris Love, Delivery Manager at South East Water, said:

“Our engineers and contractor, Farrans Construction, will not only be installing the new water main under the River Medway, but will also need to slide it under the M20 motorway and a railway line without motorists or commuters being affected.”

“When the old pipeline has burst in the past it has been extremely difficult to access and repair as it’s buried within marshland.

“We have spent years looking at the best route for this new water pipe, the installation of which will be one of the most complex water main projects that we have ever carried out.”

Work to install the new seven kilometre pipeline, which will snake between Leybourne Lakes Country Park and the water treatment works at Burham via Larkfield, will begin on 5 January.

Costing £8.1 million, it will link into the Company’s existing water main network and ensure that water can reach Maidstone, Larkfield, Leybourne, Snodland and Aylesford far more easily.

South East Water has been undertaking environmental preparation work since September in both Leybourne Lakes Country Park and at Bushey Wood near Burham.

A total of seven kilometres in length, the new pipeline’s diameter will vary between 300mm and 600mm. Nine million litres of water a day will be carried by the new pipeline - the old pipeline currently carries 8.5 million litres of water a day.
