United Utilities extends water efficiency trial

Householders signed up to a pioneering water efficiency trial being run by United Utilities in west Cumbria have cut their water usage by 11.6 per cent in just six months.

Now researchers working for water company United Utilities are looking for 300 more Copeland and Allerdale homes to take part.

Experts estimate the current rate of water saving by participating families could be taking up to £80 a year from the average family of four’s combined utility bills.

The 11.6% saving translates to £20.58 saving per year for the average (metered) household in West Cumbria, based on the volumetric charge for water alone. Assuming the households pay for their wastewater as well, this increases the total saving up to £37.33 off the annual water bill. Reductions in hot water usage will also shrink the household energy bill by an average of £44 a year, which brings the potential combined saving off household utility bills to about £81.33.

United Utilities’ demand strategy manager Clare Bullen said the idea behind the scheme was to get real data on how much water and money families can actually save using just a few simple steps.

“The work we’re pioneering here in west Cumbria could change the face of water efficiency campaigns across the UK. Most people don’t realise that saving water can actually help cut energy bills too, because the more water you use the more power you use too. Nearly a quarter of your energy bill is spent heating water.

“The reason we chose west Cumbria is because it’s where we need to protect sensitive local water sources. As a company we’re taking big steps to save water and we want to demonstrate how easy – and profitable - it can be for people to do their bit as well."

So far 700 householders have signed up but the company needs another 300 by April. IUnder thescheme, which is free, expertswill assess current water usage, provide advice and fit gadgets to home appliances. The results are then monitored over 12 months.
