Grontmij have achieved multiple successes at Northumbrian Water’s annual GEM Awards (Going the Extra Mile) at Beamish Hall, County Durham.
Northumbrian Water recently held their 4th annual GEM Awards at which Grontmij won three awards for 'Team of the Year', 'Project of the Year' and 'Programme of the Year'.
Grontmij was the ‘Team of the Year’ winner for its work on the water company’s AMP5 Flooding Programme. One of Northumbrian Water’s main outputs in the AMP5 capital programme was the removal of 1135 properties from the DG5 flooding register, representing the second largest flooding programme in the UK. Through collaboration with the supply chain a new approach was developed to streamline process from feasibility to detailed design and construction. The target was exceeded with 1142 outputs actually achieved and the resultant financial and reputational impact to the client avoided.
Grontmij’s work on the Howdon Biomethane Gas To Grid scheme won it –the ‘Project of the Year’ award. Northumbrian Water wanted to install a Biomethane Injection Plant (BIP) at Howdon to support their Future Horizons 2040 strategy. Works were to be integrated with Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) processes to produce biomethane for injection into the Northern Gas Networks grid. Revenue would be generated from export of biomethane under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) that encourages generation of renewable biomethane to reduce carbon emissions.
The primary milestone was an operational plant to secure the top flat-rate feed-in tariff, in force in 2014, with a tariff lifetime of 20 years and a projected income of £3million per annum.
Grontmij were engaged by NW to produce the design and aid with commissioning. Grontmij, Interserve, NWL, AMEC and many specialist sub-contractors worked collaboratively, as one team to meet difficult targets of delivering gas to grid by the end of 2015.
Grontmij were also finalists for the Stamford Road Flooding ‘Project of the Year’ Award.
Northumbrian Water’s Acceptability Of Water Programme saw Grontmij win the ‘Programme of the Year’ award.
Northumbrian Water’s regulatory commitment to improve customers’ water quality over a ten year (AMP4 and AMP5) period was entitled ‘The Acceptability of Water to Customers (AoW) Programme’. They were targeted with reducing customer contacts for discoloured water from 14,000 in 2004 to 4,000 by the end of 2014, by the DWI. This involved a commitment to clean or refurbish a minimum of 328km of large diameter trunk mains in the Tyneside area by the end of March 2015.
This target was surpassed by December 2014. Innovative designs and cleaning techniques minimised the disruption to the general public within central Newcastle and the wider area. Grontmij provided site supervision and CDM advice throughout the course of the programme across a number of projects.
