NWL: major campaign saves average of £40 on annual water bills

A  major water conservation campaign by Northumbrian Water is helping residents in a Northumberland town make significant savings on their water bills.

Northumbrian Water’s ‘Every Drop Counts’, which launched in Berwick-upon-Tweed in June, has already helped customers save an average of £40 off the cost of their annual metered water bill.

The water company is working with Berwick Community Trust and Crowder Consulting to offer free audits to homes and businesses in the town until the middle of October, to assess their water usage.

Following the audit, a range of devices worth over £100, including aerated shower heads, tap inserts and dual flush devices for toilets can be installed to help save water, energy and money.

So far, households on a water meter have saved more than 45 litres of water per day.

Customers will also receive advice on how small changes to daily habits can make a big difference to the way they use water, such as turning off the tap when brushing your teeth and repairing dripping taps.

Clair Cooper, Demand Planning Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said:

“We take top quality tap water for granted but it is a precious resource and we need to do all we can to protect it.

“As well as being prepared for the future, saving water around the home can also save you hundreds of pounds per year in water and energy bills. Not many people realise that much of their water use contributes to their energy bill, mostly through heating the water for showers and baths.”

“We’ll be carrying out water audits in Berwick until mid-October and we want everybody to help us make every drop, and every penny count.”

The Every Drop Counts campaign in Berwick follows Northumbrian Water’s first whole-town approach to water conservation in Wooler last year, which successfully helped the town save more than 35,000 litres of water per day.
