Yorkshire Water has been granted a permit by the Environment Agency to expand the sludge treatment facility at its Wheldale Wastewater treatment works in Castleford.
The permit will enable the water company to extend the site boundary to accommodate the addition of further sludge treatment plant to facilitate an increased throughput for the treatment of sludge on site.
In June Yorkshire Water made a separate application to the Agency to revise the existing Odour Management Plan for the plant
Part of the permit conditions require Yorkshire Water to ensure that energy is used efficiently in the activities planned for the site, together with reviewing and recording at least every 4 years whether there are suitable opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of the activities. The Agency also requires Yorkshire Water to do likewise with regard to the use of raw materials and water at the site.
New plant proposed for the site under the water company’s application includes three primary settlement tanks, three new settlement tanks, two sludge storage tanks, a new ASP, a sludge thickening building and new pipework.
