Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay, developer of the £1 billion Swansea Tidal Lagoon scheme, is to retender the main £300 million marine works package after parting company with preferred bidder China Harbour Engineering Company.
A spokesperson said that TLSB has taken the decision to retender the marine works package in line with the requirement to deliver optimal value-for-money to investors and to consumers.
It is understood that the Chinese contractor has been taken off the project following a review into the project’s advanced works packages by TLSB –CHEC’s design for the 9.5km seawall had apparently failed to meet the target price.
Laing O’Rourke was named last May as preferred bidder for the £200 million contract to deliver the 410 metre turbine house and sluice structure block for the project, with General Electric and Andritz Hydro chosen as preferred bidders for a £300 million contract to supply sixteen bi-directional turbines for the tidal lagoon.
Ex-Balfour Beatty chief Andrew McNaughton, who joined the TLSB project team last May as engineering and construction director, is also reported to have left.
Mike Unsworth, who joined Tidal Lagoon Power last May, has taken over as Director of Construction. Currently Vice Chair of Renewable UK’s Offshore Wind Delivery Group, he has been involved in the delivery of some of the UK’s largest renewable energy infrastructure projects.
Although the Swansea Tidal Lagoon scheme has been granted full planning, the £1 billion project is currently on hold pending the outcome of a Government review led by former energy minister Charles Hendry into the viability of tidal lagoon power.
