Yorkshire Water has started a major upgrade of its Tankersley waste water treatment works – a new treatment process is being installed which will result in improved water quality in the Birdwell Dike.
Built in 1950 the works treats waste from approximately 2,000 customers and businesses in the area.

The water company’s contractors AGT (AECOM Galliford Try) are installing new technology at the site to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the treatment process, and reduce the amount of ammonia in the treated waste water that is discharged back into the Birdwell Dike.
The technology involves specially designed plastic carriers which provide a large surface area for micro-organisms (good bacteria) to grow on and perform biological treatment. These carriers are kept in suspension in a tank and bacteria from the wastewater also attach themselves to them. Oxygen is bubbled through the tank so the good bacteria can break down the sewage.
The very compact configuration of this treatment process requires less space than traditional wastewater treatment systems.
Yorkshire Water Project Manager Louise Hastings said the work, which is expected to be complete by the end of this year, will improve water quality in the local watercourses and enhance biodiversity.
