Scottish Water progresses new £24m strategic water mains project

Work is progressing on a major Scottish Water project to install a new £24 million strategic water main.

The work will be carried out during the last two weeks of June to connect the new water main to the existing network.

More than 85,000 people in parts of North Ayrshire will benefit from improved security of their water supply and a reduction in the risk of burst mains when the project is completed.

Scottish Water started work in September 2016 on the construction of the 7.3 mile-long water main south of Drybridge, near Dreghorn, to the west of Eglinton Country Park.

The investment will benefit customers in Irvine, Kilwinning, Stevenston, Dreghorn, Drybridge and parts of Saltcoats.

The new main will replace an existing main whose route goes through more built-up areas, including the north east of Irvine and parts of Bourtreehill, Broomlands and Dreghorn.

The project, which is expected to be completed later this year, is a part of Scottish Water’s major investment in Ayrshire which was announced in December 2015.

The £120 million investment in the utility’s water mains infrastructure will benefit almost 220,000 people in much of Ayrshire and part of East Renfrewshire.
