Severn Trent Water tests new back-up water supply for £250m Birmingham resilence scheme

Severn Trent Water is getting ready to test water supplies for the south east of Birmingham to test part of a new back-up supply.

The Elan Valley Aqueduct (EVA) has been bringing water from Wales for the city of Birmingham and surrounding suburbs for over 100 years. It also provides water for Severn Trent’s wider network of pipes which supplies water to thousands of customers right across the region.

In order to carry out regular maintenance on the EVA, the aqueduct needs to be taken out of action for a few weeks each year.

The water company is investing around £250 million to build a new pipeline from the River Severn to Birmingham to act as an alternative water supply to allow the essential maintenance of the aqueduct to take place and act as a back up in emergencies.

Next week Severn Trent Water will run a short test on the main pipe which links Birmingham’s water pipes to the rest of the network, to ensure the company can draw water into Birmingham from nine water treatment works outside of the city.
