Northumbrian Water to invest £5m in County Durham sewer network upgrades

Northumbrian Water is investing £5 million in upgrades to its sewer network serving the Wingate and Station Town areas of County Durham.

The work to install a new pumping station and divert the sewer around the wooded area at Heads Hope Dene will help protect the environment and futureproof the network.

The project is to reduce the risk of pollution to Head Hope Dene caused by flooding from the sewer due to blockages and land slip.

The project will see the new pumping station constructed at the eastern end of the dene, with new sewers installed connecting that with the Heath View area, allowing for flows to be removed from the old pipes.

The work, which is set to start on Monday next week and run until August 2022, is being carried out by Northumbrian Water’s construction partner Mott MacDonald Bentley.

Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager Richard Greenwell said:

“Protecting the environment and ensuring our network is resilient and fit for the future are really important to us and this investment tackles both of these priorities for the Wingate and Station Town areas.

“We are working closely with Mott MacDonald Bentley and Durham County Council to keep disruption to a minimum for customers in the area and will be providing updates on our Community Portal for those who are interested in the progress of the work.”
