Severn Trent progresses £7.6 million Hixon sewage treatment works upgrade

Severn Trent is progressing work on a £7.6 million upgrade for Hixon sewage treatment works - the utility’s latest project to improve the water and wastewater networks in Staffordshire.

The water company has now reached the next phase of the project, which started in October 2023 and is due for completion by 15th December 2024.

Severn Trent has already carried out some investigation to improve the waste network in the area and now needs to carry out essential maintenance on the network, including the installation of brand-new pipework and other sewage assets such as below ground tanks.

Part of the works will involve the relocation of the outfall which sends water which has been through the treatment process back to the environment, from Moreton Brook to the River Trent.

Kay Gill, Community Communications Officer at Severn Trent, said:

“In the last three decades we've invested over £12 billion in improving the sewage treatment system across our operational area. This project is just part of the £100 million that we spend every year on our sewage network, improving systems, reducing sewer flooding and pollutions and installing more monitoring capability.

“While final effluent is water that has gone through our treatment process, it may still contain some trace chemicals, so by moving the outfall to a larger watercourse – like the River Trent – we can minimise any potential impact.

“This creates a better, more vibrant wildlife habitat in the brook and means that there is less likely to be flooding during heavy rain.”

Residents living near the village of Hixon are being invited to a drop-in session on Wednesday 24th April 2024 to learn more about the ongoing £7.6 million project to improve the sewage treatment works.
