NI Water reaches half-way milestone on PC21 Trunk Mains framework project

NI Water has reached the mid-way point in its ongoing Trunk Mains investment programme across Northern Ireland. The main contractor for the Trunk Mains Framework as part of the Price Control six-year PC21 Business Plan (2021-27) is Farrans Construction, with WSP providing technical and support services.

NI WATER Trunk Mains programme

The Trunk Mains project team are delivering a programme of work consisting of 66km of trunk mains across 9 projects covering the province, benefitting areas such as the Ards Peninsula and wider County Down area, Enniskillen, and the North West.

Highlights include the completion of a recent £7.4 million project, which will be essential to the future resilience of the water supply infrastructure, primarily in the Ards Peninsula area, as well as the ongoing Killyhevlin to Cavanacross Trunkmain which transfers bulk water supply from the Killyhevlin Water Treatment Works (WTW) to Cavanacross Service Reservoir, improving the security of the water supply for approximately 10,000 customers in the area.

Over £3 million was invested in the recently completed Killyhevlin to Cavanacross Trunk Main (Phase 1), with a new £1 million investment now underway on Phase 2.

The Crescent Link Trunk main was another highlight, resulting in improved security of the water supply for over 10,000 local customers in the North West. The project was undertaken in a densely populated urban area with high volumes of traffic, overcoming challenging ground conditions and congested existing services. The team achieved many highlights including crossing the A6 Dungiven Road, whilst completing 7 major connections throughout the project.

A £5.7 Million Water Improvement Scheme – Fofanny to Altmore Phase 1, which will be essential to the future resilience of the water supply infrastructure for customers in the South Down area is also ongoing with a major river crossing on the Upper River Bann successfully completed and essential pipelaying in the Bryansford Road area.

Tzvetelina Bogoina, NI Water’s Director of Infrastructure Delivery said:

“We are delighted to announce the mid-way point on our PC21 Trunk Mains framework. We have made excellent progress on this innovative framework to date, and I would like to pay tribute to all the teams involved.

“All of these new trunk mains across Northern Ireland will support and improve the local water supply infrastructure for customers. Security of supply is key and this will be especially important during extreme weather conditions.”
