Severn Trent progresses £76 million investment in Nature Based Solutions in Mansfield

Severn Trent is progressing its £76 million investment in Mansfield in a range of Nature Based Solutions to protect communities from flooding.

Bioswale in bloom

Working alongside Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, this is the largest project of its kind ever to be attempted in the country.

When completed, the scheme will be able to store over 58 million litres of surface water, reducing flood risk for 90,000 people.

Over the next few years the water company will be putting in more than 20,000 Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) across Mansfield

SuDS work by diverting surface water away from sewers, slowing it down and helping drains to cope.  The solutions include:

Basins, planters and swales

To catch rainwater and water runoff from roads and roofs. They are filled with plants that help to filter and hold the water.

Swales

Shallow channels with sloping sides – are useful at storing the water and releasing it more slowly into the ground.

Permeable paving

Used for carparks, walkways, and other hard surfaces, contains lots of tiny holes which allow water to pass through and soak slowly into the ground beneath.

Rain gardens

Rain gardens use plants and soil to retain and slow the flow of rainwater from surrounding hard surfaces. They also help cool urban areas in the summer.

This week will see Severn Trent begin work on a new Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) in Mansfield. Work on the new bioswale, which soaks up and slows down surface water during heavy rainfall, will begin on 4th November and run until 26th February. SuDS are being installed across the town to help sewer systems cope with added pressure during adverse weather conditions.

Lisa Orme, Community Engagement Manager said:

“The SuDS programme in Mansfield is a huge project for us, and we’re delighted to be making rapid progress on delivering this £76 million investment.”

The £76 million project started in Spring 2022 and aims to finish by 2025.
