South West Water is in the process of investigating the cause of the high spill numbers during 2024 from its Salcombe Regis storm overflow.

The latest figures released by the Environment Agency show that the company’s Salcombe Regis overflow in Devon was spilling water for a total of 8,773 hours.into a nearby stream for the whole of 2024.
Commenting on the data, ocal media organisation Devon Live has described Devon as “home to the most active sewage site in the country.”
A statement issued by South West Water on Friday said:
“We are investigating the cause of the high spill numbers from Salcombe Regis storm overflow however, we already know that several significant unauthorised connections to the sewer network are contributing high levels of additional flows into the sewer. This includes highway road gullies with extensive road run off which are allowing water to enter our sewers, dramatically increasing the levels in the network.”
