Southern Water is investing £9m to update its Morestead Road Wastewater Treatment Works in Winchester.
The extensive upgrade will improve the quality of the treated wastewater returned to the environment.
New pumps, settlement tanks, generators and treatment systems are being installed to help meet tightening standards.A new ferric dosing plant is also being installed to remove phosphate during the treatment process.
Phosphate raises the amount of nutrients in water and may lead to algal blooms which can affect the balance of ecosystems. It is present in wastewater from a variety of sources including washing powders.
The ferric reacts with the phosphate to create a solid material that can be easily removed in the wastewater treatment process.
The project is due to be completed by December 2013. The work is being carried out by Southern Water’s supplier 4Delivery, a consortium comprising Veolia Water, Costain and MWH.
Project Manager Jon Kenrick said:
“The improvements on site are progressing well given the restrictions on space to construct new plant facilities.”
