Yorkshire Water is working with other organisations to ensure drainage systems at Hornsea and Withernsea are functioning properly.
Working as part of the Yorkshire Bathing Water Partnership, which includes the Environment Agency and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Yorkshire Water is pinpointing wrongly connected domestic plumbing as an issue that can affect bathing water quality at these two coastal resorts.
Work starts this week to find out where issues with the drainage system, called ‘cross-connections’, exist.
Specialist contractors DrainsAid will be carrying out the work on behalf of the Bathing Water Partnership during September, using specialist CCTV surveying equipment.
The results will be reviewed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to identify which homeowners may need to be approached to resolve cross-connections.
Lindsay Page, Yorkshire Water’s Bathing Water Manager comments:
“The multi-agency Yorkshire Bathing Water Partnership has already worked hard to gather as much information as possible on the sources of pollution affecting the water quality of these bathing beaches.
“Our detailed coastal modelling has shown that at these towns, the vast majority of potential pollution is from agricultural and urban "diffuse” sources, including wrongly connected plumbing. That's why we're funding this drainage system study. We want to help our partners better understand this source of pollution.”
