Anglian Water wins string of Business in the Community Awards

Anglian Water won a string of awards from Business in the Community last week, confirming it as one of the country’s most community-minded and environmentally conscious companies.

Against stiff opposition, Anglian Water won the Environmental Leadership Award for its commitment to tackling climate change, the Active Communities Award for its RiverCare project and the Education Award for its work with schoolchildren. It also won the Best Business in the Community Award category.

The prestigious accolades, which were presented at the East of England Excellence Awards at Audley End House near Saffron Walden, come days after Business in the Community confirmed that Anglian Water is in the Platinum section of the annual Corporate Responsibility Index.

The Awards for Excellence are the UK’s most influential, independent, peer assessed corporate responsibility awards. Run in association with the Financial Times, the awards recognise and celebrate those companies who have shown innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to corporate responsibility

Mark Pendlington, Anglian Water’s Director of Corporate Affairs, said:

“We are proud to be making such a positive impact on the communities we serve and are delighted to win such prestigious recognition for the strength of our commitment.

“Our work with local communities has led to a flourishing RiverCare project across the region, with more than 900 regular volunteers active in bringing about environmental improvements.

“Last year almost 40,000 children attended education sessions with our own teachers and we aim to build on this success, raising awareness of climate change and environmental issues.”

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community said:

“I congratulate all the winners of a Big Tick this year. In the current economic climate it is fantastic to see so many strong examples of businesses that recognise the benefits, both social, environmental and to their bottom line, of being a responsible business.

The Big Tick is now recognised as both a valuable and difficult award to achieve. It means a company has demonstrated ways in which they positively make a difference to the environment, their workplace, the community or in the marketplace in which they sell, advertise or trade.”
