Ofwat has appointed the fourth new entrant to supply both water and sewerage services to household customers (making five new entrants in total).
Veolia Water Projects, a subsidiary of Veolia Water UK, has been granted an appointment that will allow it to supply 600 civilian customers and around 1200 Ministry of Defence staff in married quarters and operations at Tidworth, on the border of Hampshire and Wiltshire.
This was formerly within Thames Water’s supply area. Thames became the appointee for the site in 1998.
Companies can apply for appointments to enable them to replace another supplier in a specific geographical area. Veolia Water Projects will serve its customers by using water from on-site bore holes and discharging wastewater to an on-site sewerage system.
Ofwat has stipulated that Veolia Water Projects's customers will pay no more and receive a quality of service as least as good as if Thames had continued to serve the site. Ofwat published its consultation paper in August 2008 asking for views on its proposal to grant Veolia Water Projects an appointment.
