South East Water finalises plans for £6m water main upgrade

South East Water is finalising plans to install a new £6 million water main which will help secure future tap water supplies to parts of the Maidstone, Larkfield, Ditton, Leybourne and Aylesford areas.

The old pipeline which pumps water from a treatment works near Burham to residents currently lies within Burham Marshes and has burst nine times in four years.

The route the water company has devised for the new pipeline is seven kilometres in length - the first stage of work to install the water main is expected to start in September.

South East Water’s contractor Clancy Docwra started work in August 2013 digging investigation holes in the local area to determine both the type of ground and whether there are any other utility services under the ground that the water company is not already aware of.

The new pipeline will link water treatment works near Burham to existing water mains which feed Maidstone, Larkfield, Ditton, Leybourne and Aylesford and will ensure water can be moved to where it is needed most far more easily.

Chris Love, Delivery Manager at South East Water said it was essential to replace the old water main which due to its location in marshland is extremely difficult to access and repair, commenting:

“We have spent a long time looking at where we can install a replacement water main which can be easily reached if needed in the future.”

“We are currently still finalising these plans and will provide further updates to the local community as soon as we have them.”
