Balfour Beatty has won a £7 million contract from North Yorkshire County Council to construct a road coast protection and slope stabilisation scheme at Sandsend in the Scarborough District.
The requirements of the scheme are to ensure stabilisation of the upper coastal slope and the replacement of the existing concrete revetment to provide a standard of protection against 1 in 200 year still water and wave levels, with a design life of 100 years .
The aim of the scheme is to manage the risk of isolation of the community of Sandsend by maintaining a road link. The key benefits of the scheme are the protection of properties for up to 100 years from coastal erosion, the maintaining of the vital link between Sandsend and Whitby to allow access for major facilities and emergency services.
