Civils contractors: government must implement new infrastructure plans without delay

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) has today welcomed the Government’s publication of the National Infrastructure Delivery Plan 2016- 2021 and the Government Construction Strategy 2016 - and called for immediate implementation of the reforms.

The Association represents over 300 contractors of all sizes, covering approximately 80% of the civil engineering market in Great Britain.

The National Infrastructure Delivery Plan brings together all of the Government’s infrastructure priorities for the next five years, underpinned by public and private investment and incorporates the latest version of the National Infrastructure Pipeline.

The new Construction Strategy commits to reducing the cost of projects by £1.7 billion during this Parliament through innovation and greater efficiencies. The strategy is part of a suite of documents from the Infrastructure and Projects Authority to improve delivery, efficiency and performance across infrastructure projects.

Commenting, Chief Executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Alasdair Reisner said:

“CECA welcomes the publication of these documents, which provides visibility of £483 billion of infrastructure investment including over £297 billion to 2020-21.”

“At the same time the new Construction Strategy will deliver increased productivity to support delivery of £163 billion of planned projects.”

“The publications of these two new strategies alongside the establishment of the Infrastructure and Projects Authority will improve industry confidence in the delivery of public infrastructure over the next few years.”

He added that the Government must now work with the construction industry to implement the reforms as soon as possible to ensure the delivery of world-class infrastructure in the UK.
