Argyll and Bute Council has gone out to tender with a contract for the construction of the £multi-million Campbeltown Flood Protection Scheme.
The aim of the scheme is to reduce the risk of river flooding and surface water flooding in Campbeltown.
The Council’s consultant AECOM is managing the overall flood scheme.
The scope of the contract includes:
- Millknowe Flood Storage Reservoir – Construction of an impounding structure across the river and floodplain, flow control culvert and spillway. Sheet pile flood walls will form part of the storage area to protect the industrial estate.
- Dalaruan Culvert Upgrade – Partial upgrade to increase capacity for the Millknowe and Balegreggan Burns. Upsize a 270m length from the Millknowe intake. Pipe diameters will be increased to between 675 – 1200mm.
- Surface Water Elements – Retrofit of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, within urban setting, to reduce load on the combined drainage network. Providing new drainage lines for existing road drains to disconnect from the combined network. Two detention basins and two filter drains are to be provided in above ground storage in the Meadows and below ground tank type storage at Burnside car park.
In 2019 the Council put a possible cost of £9.33 million on the scheme - to date development of the scheme has received £4.787 million of Scottish Government funding. The Scottish Government is expected to contribute 80% of the total funding, while the council will fund the remaining 20%.
