United Utilities gives supply chain advance notice of future procurement of green hydrogen

United Utilities has given the supply chain advance notice of its intention to launch a future procurement exercise to source green hydrogen for use at one of its sites.

UNITED UTILITIES MANCHESTER BIROSOURCES CENTRE DAVYHULME WWTW

The water company is looking to decarbonise the fuel supply requirements at a site in Davyhulme in Manchester through the purchase and utilisation of green hydrogen. The requirements are for a green hydrogen supply to the site including:

  • Volumes of 25-35GWh per annum.
  • First delivery of hydrogen in 2026

United Utilities believe that green hydrogen may be able to provide a suitable decarbonisation strategy for heating requirements at its Davyhulme site.

The water company wants to understand if the market can supply in a first phase up to 35 GWh of green hydrogen per year, ideally via pipeline, with first delivery in 2026. It is likely that any project will be a shortlisted project qualifying under the Hydrogen Business model process run by the UK government.

To meet the target first delivery date in 2026, any project must demonstrate progress towards their final investment decision, including evidence e.g. of planning permission and/or grid connections being available or in the process of being obtained.

Estimated date of publication of a formal contract notice is October 2025.

The water company has issued a Periodic Indicative Notice inviting interested suppliers with relevant experience to get in touch. Click here to access the PIN documentation
